It was founded in 1917 and named El Segundo by Chevron because it was the second refinery Chevron had built. As a result, El Segundo came together as a place for the workers to live in.

The refinery takes a portion of land in this beautiful coastal town which is a major downside to this charming city. Along with that, there are industrial plants located along the beach which takes away from the natural beauty. Also located in El Segundo are LA DWP electrical power generating plant and the LA DWP wastewater treatment plant. Proud locals like to say “El Segundo a nada’ meaning second to none.
